Rank: 6, Batch: 2016
Place: Mumbai, Maharashtra
I stay with my parents in Mumbai. I decided to appear for gate when I was in my final year of engineering. It was because in our college we had only software companies placements and I wanted to work in core electronics field like VLSI, so GATE was the better option.
My first reaction
After I saw my result, I straight went to my mom and told that I got 6th rank. She was very happy. Then I called my dad and told him about the result. It was a good atmosphere at home after that. I would give credit to my parents, as they were very supportive throughout my journey, and the almighty.
I did self-study for GATE 2014 as well as for GATE 2016. So for me coaching wasn’t necessary. But I had joined online test series of some institutes, and that was quite useful for me in my preparation.
A. Study schedule
I used to prepare from reference books. Every month I target 2 subjects. First I used to read from reference books along with that used to prepare my own notes. After reading, I solved practice questions given in Gateforum printed notes. This continued till November. By then I had completed all the topics, after that I started with online test series and revision which continued up to Gate exam. I used to study for 3 hours/day starting from June. Since I was also working for a company therefore I could not give more than 3 hours on weekdays.
B. Strong and Weak subjects (How did I prepared them?)
My weak subject was Communication, I just gave more time to it and therefore also read B.P Lathi multiple times. I would recommend Nptel videos for subjects in which you are weak.

I just went through few aptitude formulae, 2 days before GATE exam.
Yes I had enrolled for online test series of Gateforum, Ace academy and MadeEasy. They are necessary as GATE is an online exam, so you should have sufficient practice before actual GATE exam.
Time was a major issue for me in GATE 2016. As I could not attempt 2-3 questions. Also online calculator takes little extra time. So I made minimal use of online calculator, and used scribble pad provided for most of the calculations. I started with multiple choice questions first and then later attempted numerical type.
For IITs interview, concepts should be clear. For PSUs interview, just the normal HR questions would be sufficient and revision of GATE concepts would be useful.
I will be joining IISC Bangalore for MTech in microelectronics.
Advice to fellow students
More important than anything else is the determination to crack GATE 2016 exam. Once that is in place, everything else can be worked on. Get your subject, concepts in order, be clear with them and then start testing your knowledge. Don’t forget to prepare the reference notes when studying the subject. Use time wisely and be honest with yourself. GATE paper will just be one barrier you will have crossed to a bright future.
All the best!!
