Sandipan Paul

I am Sandipan, presently studying M.E. in Civil Engineering at IISc, Bangalore. When I appeared for gate exam, I was a 4th year student at BESU, Shibpur. I always had a strong desire to pursue higher studies, therefore, I appeared for gate. I started preparing for GATE from the very beginning of 4th year.

My first reaction

Of course I felt good after checking my GATE result though I was not surprised as I expected something like this to happen. I would like to thank my parents for sure. I belong to a middle-class family. During campus placement, I bagged a job at Larsen & Toubro. But, I wanted to pursue higher studies. My parents never forced me to do the job. I would like to thank my professors, one of my college seniors and of course some of my friends.

I personally feel it’s immaterial whether you join a coaching centre or not. You have to get your basic concepts clear and you need to practice. That’s the key to success. I didn’t join any coaching centre. I used to study notes given by my college professors and study materials by MadeEasy.

I did not have any particular study schedule. Preparing study schedule is really difficult during 4th year days. I first went through the whole syllabus once and then used to revise it and try solving various problems.

Books and e-sources

Aptitude Section:
Are you gonna believe me if I say I didn’t prepare for the aptitude section. I just solved the whole paper including the aptitude section while taking mock tests and that was all.

Mock tests

Yes, mock tests are really needed. I took them from Gateforum and the Gate Academy.

Examination day

I spent more time on technical section and gave quite less importance to the aptitude section.

I didn’t apply for any PSU as my aim was to pursue higher studies. I applied for IISc and all the old IITs, excluding IIT-G. Though I had to undergo test and interview only at IIT Bombay and IIT Kanpur. But, before the test and interview date in these two IITs, I got admission into IISc and I didn’t appear for any test or interview.

Future Plans

After completing M.E., I will go for Ph.D. After that, I haven’t decided yet. Let’s see. 🙂

Advice to fellow students

Keep calm and get yourself prepared. It’s not that tough 🙂
