Shreshth Tayal - AIR 20 CA Final Nov 2015, Faridabad Haryana
Shreshth Tayal

I am Shreshth Tayal, 22 years old, from Palwal, Haryana. I have secured All India Rank 20 in CA Final, Nov’15 exams. I have completed my graduation from Delhi University. My father is a practising Chartered Accountant based in Palwal and it was him who inspired me to join this prestigious profession.

My first reaction

Relief. The first reaction was definitely of relief on clearing the CA Final exams in the first attempt. Thereafter I was extremely elated on coming to know that I have achieved my dream of securing a rank in the CA Final exams. Part of the credit for my success belongs to my parents for supporting me during my prep days, to my sister for guiding me when my morale was low, and to two of my friends who secured a rank in CA IPCC who inspired me to aim for a rank in CA Final.

Articleship

I did my 3 year internship from Deloitte Haskins & Sells in the corporate taxation team. Being in the taxation team, I developed an interest in the taxation subjects and it made it easy for me to prepare for the Direct Tax exam which is one of the trickiest subject in the curriculum. It also provided me with an opportunity to meet senior rank-holder CAs who inspired me to aim for a rank.

Preparation

Being in Deloitte, it was essential for me to save as much time as possible. Coachings can help you in saving time by making the subject easier for you and guiding you as to how to go through the subject. But coachings can never be a substitute to self study and in the end its only your self study that makes the difference.

Strategies

A study schedule is a very personal thing and every student should develop his own schedule playing to his strengths. My main aim was to be done with all my coaching classes 5 months before the exams and spend the entire 5 months on self study. I used to study subjects in pairs shifting between them alternatively every 4-5 days.

Books and e-sources

The main subject where most students face problems is ISCA. For that, I would suggest that there is no substitute to preparing from the Study Module issued by ICAI. To gain an understanding of the subject beforehand, the students can view online lectures provided by Mr. Vaibhav Gupta.

Mock tests

No, I did not attend any mock tests. I believe that saving your time for self study in the end is of paramount importance. Most of the students are not done with their preparation 2 months before the exams when the mock tests are usually conducted. Attempting tests without proper preparation might even lead to more bad than good to one’s morale.

Rank and preparation

Yes, having missed on a rank in CA IPCC by a few marks, I was really hoping to get a rank in CA Final. Clearing CA Final both groups is in itself not an easy task and preparing for a rank only requires a little more determination and consistency in preparation.

Future Plans

Having done my internship from Deloitte and with my dad being a practising Chartered Accountant himself, I have been lucky enough to have had a little taste of both worlds. I believe that I am still young and should appear for certain competitive exams before opting for a job or CA practice. That’s a call I will have to take depending on my performance in the exams I plan to give.

ICAI Campus

As stated above, I don’t plan to engage in a job right now and I have therefore not registered for the ICAI campus.

Advice to fellow students

The advice I would like to give is that preparation for CA Final does not start only a few months before the exams but almost 2 years before the exams. Its all about planning properly and sticking to that plan consistently. Plan your coachings in advance to make sure that you have ample time (read 4-5 months) for self study in the end. All the best!
