Rank: 10, Batch: May 2016
Place: Mumbai, Maharashtra
The reasons I entered the field of CA are multifaceted. One, I always have interest in numbers and numerical analysis. Second, my brother was in commerce stream when I passed my SSC. I used to look at his books which developed my interest in the commerce field. Third, there are many CAs in my family so I can say CA is in our blood.
My first reaction
I was completely taken by surprise. Though I had always dreamed of a rank, I was not expecting AIR 10. I would like to dedicate my success to God the almighty, my parents, relatives and friends. All of them played a prominent role in my success.
I’m doing my articleship with Price Waterhouse in Mumbai. It is one of the Big Fours. Though my field of work, accounting advisory of IFRS, Ind AS and US GAAP, was not much part of the CA curriculum, the work experience helped me a lot in behavioural aspects of life such as pressure handling, remaining calm and patient during difficult times etc.
I did self study for all the subjects, though I had help of my friends who went to classes. I believe that classes are there just to keep the momentum going on and if you can make that happen yourself then classes are not necessary. The ICAI material and various other reference books are themselves enough.
I started studying from Feb’15. I got 5 months exam leave from my office.
Plan, Read, Understand, Relate, Analyse, Learn – this was the flow of my study strategy. When I cleared IPCC, I knew that I have a strong grasp on practical subjects. Accordingly I decided to give lesser time to those subjects and devote that time to theory subjects.
Though I did not attend any mock tests, I tried to solve them by myself later when they were made available on ICAI website. They are good for practice but should be attempted when you are exam-ready.
Rank and preparation
My brother had secured All India Rank 4 in CA FINAL May’14 so I had a “pressure” to secure rank in at least top ten. Fortunately I managed to pull that off. My brother’s success was a big factor for me to keep the momentum going.
I am planning to further pursue studies and post that enter the corporate world.
Yes, I am preparing for the ICAI campus and if a good opportunity comes to me, I will be happy to take it.
Advice to fellow students
Students must be self-informed, confident, determined and committed to the course. One should analyse one’s strengths and weaknesses before they plan their studies and career. Most importantly, one should have discussions with their batchmates on a regular basis regarding various studies and other related topics to keep one up-to-date. Securing a rank is more about having strong determination and perseverance than academic brilliance.
